Simple techniques to promote safety and prevent patient or staff injury are outlined, as well as methods to maintain Control of the situation when a patient is acting out. This program also shows some of the reasons mental health patients fail to follow treatment plans. Appropriate methods for supporting family members and eliciting helpful information from them are also illustrated, as is the role of the nurse as a facilitator of communication between the various members of the health care team. Restrictions on the use of restraints, both physical and chemical, are also addressed. Proper documentation of observed behaviors is discussed.
